Last year I performed a wedding ceremony for family beside a brook that runs through my land. In commemoration I created a series of paintings to capture the spirit of what I have named “The Wedding Brook”.
This brook is bounded by ancient walls that lend a sense of time and history to the landscape. Since Vermont has substantially reforested over the last century most of the walls are in deep forest now. The juxtaposition of the wildness of the forest with the hand-wrought aspect of these ancient walls I find moving. They show the temporality of our existence on the land.
This painting is oil on black paper. It adds a sense of depth or mystery to the work.
