This is my Father’s accordion…in Spain. How did that happen? The concept for this painting, that of posing with my Father’s chromatic accordion, began 10 years ago when my Father gave me his old accordion. A few years ago on a trip to Spain, I came upon an old accordionist in the ancient section of Madrid, the sound echoing sweetly off of the brick street and walls. I combined these two ideas to make this work for a new show at the Southern Vermont Arts Center, in Manchester, Vermont. The theme of the show is Chromatic. Chromatic is defined as relating to or highly colored. Being a musician I also know that chromatic also means all of the notes in a scale. I playfully am incorporating these definitions together in these two works, a chromatic accordionist and a self-portrait with guitar, playing chromatic scales.
