New spex, new self portrait…

Self Portrait, Roger Vincent Jasaitis, Autumn 2012
Self Portrait, Autumn 2012

I recently received a new pair of eyeglasses so I thought that I would update my online image. This self portrait plays with the line between painting and photography. Introspection vs. extrospection (yes, it is a word you scrabble players). To blur the line between the subject and the artist on screen.

That’s you, Roger! Is it a painting? Or is it a photograph? I’m sure many will wonder about that. I like it, and I like your new spex too…

Such fun! I think of the Norman Rockwell multi-self-portrait, also, where his “real self” has dull eyeglasses while, if I recall right, the “painted” one has none — all done from the perspective of an unseen camera, of course. And of course, the portrait in the canvas within the canvas is so much more attractive than the artist shown painting. Not that you’ve employed any such conceits?
Enjoy those new glasses, all the same.

Rockwell’s playfullness went through my mind as I created this…whatever. Any suggestions for a word for this hybrid? And I always flatter my subjects…
